Worn 1999 Sportster Clutch Bearing

QuestionThe bearing at the end of the clutch adjustment screw is completely gone on my wife’s 1999 Sportster. What would cause this to go bad and how much work is it to replace?

AnswerVery rarely do these bearings wear out. The clutch must have been adjusted wrong and left to much load on the bearing. When you adjust, just touch the bearing and back off a half turn. This leaves free play for the bearing to spin. Clean fluid is a must; it’s not too hard to change. Remove the derby cover, slacken cable, and remove the snap ring and bearing. My concern is where did the debris go? You might consider removing the outer primary cover and flushing out the clutch and trans with brake cleaner just to be safe. -Wrench Safe, FMH
